I took my first footsteps into our family history with my Dad when I was about 12 years old.
He’d received a letter from a man in America, with the same surname as ours, wondering if there was a connection between our families…. So, our search began at the records office; trailing through microfiche and copying down baptisms and marriages onto blank forms.
Unfortunately, at that time, no connection could be made between the families, but the American became a family friend.
Step forward many years and after watching several series of “Who do you think you are?”, my interest was reignited. I’ve always loved history, but the idea of finding out about my own family history was too much to ignore. Who do I think I am?
How much easier it now seemed to access records, even from your own home, thanks to the internet! With only the occasional need to visit the records office.
